A little celebration goes a long way.
Here’s a peek at our staff recognition ceremony we held at Radio Mitchell. Over 68 members came together that day—some in person, some online—to celebrate something big: each other.
We were working with a small budget and a tight space, but that didn’t stop us. We printed 68 custom awards, formatted and designed in-house, created invitations, and promoted the event with intention. It took team effort, coordination, and trust to make it happen—and it paid off.
This idea came from what I’ve been learning in my business courses about how recognition drives performance. It’s not just about rewarding work—it’s about building a culture where people feel seen, valued, and inspired to keep growing.
That’s also why I implemented a new system: semesterly staff performance reviews. They’re not meant to be critical, but rather a collaborative tool to help us reflect on performance, gather feedback, and figure out how we can improve as a station, both operationally and culturally. It gives our staff a voice—and it helps us support them better.
You’ll probably notice in these photos I’m in a hoodie. At the time, I had just removed our dress code policy to let staff dress how they felt most creative. These days, I wear collared shirts and suits daily. I’ve come to appreciate business casual as my own professional style—but that journey taught me that growth looks different for everyone, and we all evolve in our own ways.
At the end of the day, I’m just grateful I got to lead this kind of experience at my age. With the support of my team, we turned a simple idea into a meaningful moment.
Thanks for reading—and here’s to more people-centered leadership.
